Mom and Dad came to town at the end of July. The first few days were extremely hot and humid, limiting our activities to visiting quilting and model train stores. Mom taught Leticia many tricks of the trade as they started a quilt together. Meanwhile, we were glad that Dad felt as comfortable here as at home; taking his afternoon nap on the living room floor. A trip to the Amana Colonies resulted in four sweaty people, the purchase of fudge and a new Christmas CD for Bruder (the colonies were settled by Germans long ago).
The Nauvoo Pageant was incredible. The live actors, including narrator Parley P. Pratt, told the history of Nauvoo. The pageant takes place at the foot of the hill below the temple, and focuses on how important the temple was to the early Saints. We especially enjoyed the bagpipe parade.
We were also able to take a three day trip to Kansas City, Missouri. While we were there, we were able to visit the historic Liberty Jail and the site where the Independence Temple was going to be built.

The Minnesota Twins were also in town, so we visited Kauffman Stadium to watch them play the Royals. At times it seemed like there were more Twins fans in the stands- maybe they just had more to cheer about. Johan Santana, one of the greatest pitchers in recent years, started for the Twins and was unbelievable. The Twins came back from behind by scoring five runs in the ninth and tenth innings to win. The game was followed by a fantastic fireworks show. The next night was military appreciation night where the first 20,000 fans received camouflage Royals hats. Less than 25,000 fans attended the game, but we managed to be among the last 5,000 to arrive. We saw several homeruns as the Twins won 14-3. Mom especially enjoyed the games by memorizing the names and stats of the players, while finding all of our friends and family in the crowd.
